My husband and I ate dinner here on Saturday, Jan. 29th with my daughter.  We were on our way to Atlantic City and decided to stop here for a taste of their barbecue.  As I have posted before, I enjoy the flavor of a vinegar based sauce with spices to make a moderate amount of heat without overpowering the pork.  This is what I was looking for.

I ordered the Georgia Chopped Pork and Barbecue Chicken, both without any barbecue sauce, with Garlic Red-Skin Mashed Potatoes and Creamy Coleslaw.  I saw the tray with six different barbecue sauces and decided I could make my own barbecue flavor to suit me.  The pork was served on a slice of bread alongside the chicken laid on a piece of brown paper on a metal pan as you can see in the photograph.  The chicken was not barbecued at all.  It looked and tasted like a rotisserie breast and wing.  The Creamy Coleslaw and  Garlic Red-Skin Mashed Potatoes were served in small black bowls.  Cornbread accompanied the meal and it had been cooked muffin style, and it was dry.  I removed the cupcake paper and left at least a third of it on the paper itself.

The pork tasted good by itself, however, it had little-barbecued flavor.  It tasted more like oven roasted.  I decided to try to improve the flavor by using one of the sauces in the basket.  My first choice was “…………..Revenge”.  It was so hot it nearly took my breath away.  Luckily, I put a small amount on the paper and tasted it with the tines of my fork.  It took lots of Raspberry Tea to get rid of the burning sensation.  My next try was a Sweet one also in the back of the tray.  It dulled the burning in my mouth but added little more than sweet ketchup to the pork and chicken.

The Creamy Coleslaw had been chopped into 1/4 to 1/2 inch pieces.  They were hard to chew and must have been part of the hard stems of the cabbage leaves.  The sauce was sweet but had little other flavors.

My husband ordered the Texas Beef Brisket and the Country Roasted Chicken with Garlic Red-Skin Mashed Potatoes and Dave’s Cheesy Mac and Cheese.  He enjoyed the Brisket without any sauce after observing my failure to find a suitable one.  His Country Roasted Chicken looked just like mine.

My daughter had Chicken Chopped Salad with a Ranch Dressing.  She enjoyed it.  I wish I had gotten it.

I was not at all pleased with my meal at Dave’s Famous Bar-B-Que.  It has a full bar and the waitress was kind and efficient.  She checked with us regularly to see if we needed anything, so I have no complaints about the service.

My comment is:  “If an establishment is going to serve barbecue, then all its dishes should taste like they have been cooked over some kind of open fire.  And if one is going to offer sauces of different varieties, then one should make them with moderate sweetness and moderate hotness to suit the general public.”

I give Dave’s Famous Bar-B-Que 3 plates.
