NEW LEAF TEAROOM
606 Main Street
RIVERTON, NJ
The Tearoom, itself, did not look like this. It showed its age, and was only a sidewalk away from the street. The front had been redesigned to include a winding ramp leading from the parking lot in the back to the front door. The lot was barely large enough to hold all the cars from our group and a few others already inside.
Tables were small rectangular shapes with seating for ten at each, although we did not need all of them, and they were too narrow and too close together. They could have provided more room between them, so people could get in and out easily.
There were several different kinds of hot teas to choose from. Hot tea served in pitchers with names clearly marked were kept warm on candle burners, however, the Tea was not strong enough to get the full effect of the blend, however.
We could bring only 4 bottles of wine for entire group of 19., and there were dispensers of Mimosa and Shirley Temple. Wine glasses were provided.
We were charged for the full 25 people the room called for even though we were only 17 of us. (One couple could not make it due to an accident on the way to the place.)
The food was good. The small finger sandwiches, had various fillings and the small desert offerings were also small, but the one chocolate covered strawberry per person was fairly large.
There were no complaints from anyone about the amount of food they received or its taste, which was surprising since my husband was convinced he should bring a pizza.
Hats were available for men and women to wear, if desired, and the children as well. Beads provided a ‘dress up’ opportunity, and the children had a wonderful time making use of these costume pieces.
Two bottles of wines were opened, and they provided stoppers. Wine left over was poured down the drain.
A variety of vintage tea cups and saucers were used which provided a sense of English tea time. The table was crowded with their small topiary trees, two-tiered finger foods holder, scone plates, and tea pots. There was very little room for our floral centerpieces.
We were allowed to bring home any food not eaten, but if not consumed by the next day, it was almost inedible.
The staff was courteous, but not very tolerant of my grandchildren. The staff told them on several occasions to sit down and be quiet. Granted, the children, ages 8 to 10, and one four-year old were acting like the children they are, but they should not be expected to be completely quiet and as reserved as the adults. Their Mother was not appreciative of the constant battle between them and her kids. They had table of their own with peanut butter sandwiches and deserts.
It is an okay place for adults – a good venue for showers, etc., but I would not rush to go back there especially with my grand kids OR my husband.
I give it 3 and 1/2 plates.
